How to Choose Lip Color by Personal Color Season
K-beauty lip shades by warm or cool undertone and personal color season
Personal color analysis is popular in Korea, and Seoul has many personal color consulting salons. The system categorizes individuals into four seasonal types, Spring Warm, Summer Cool, Autumn Warm, and Winter Cool, based on skin undertone, hair color, and eye color. Choosing lip products that match your personal color season matters because lip color sits at the center of the face and changes how healthy or washed-out you look. Romand, Peripera, and CLIO organize their shade ranges by personal color season, which makes choosing easier.
To identify your season, examine three factors. First, vein color: blue-purple veins indicate cool undertones, green veins indicate warm. Second, jewelry test: if gold flatters you more, you are likely warm; if silver, cool. Third, white paper test: hold white paper next to bare skin, if your skin looks yellowish, you are warm; if pinkish or bluish, you are cool. Spring Warm suits bright, clear coral and peach tones. Summer Cool looks best in muted rose, mauve, and dusty pink. Autumn Warm suits brick, terracotta, and burnt orange. Winter Cool suits berry, true red, and deep plum. Knowing your season helps you avoid colors that look good in the tube but wrong on your face.
For Spring Warm types, Romand Juicy Lasting Tint in #09 Litchi Coral ($8) and Peripera Ink Mood Glowy Tint in #04 Coral Beaming ($9) are bright, warm corals for everyday wear. Summer Cool types should reach for Romand Blur Fudge Tint in #11 Fudge Rose ($10) or CLIO Dewy Blur Tint in #05 Rosy Suede ($12), offering muted rose tones without warmth. Autumn Warm types can try Romand Juicy Lasting Tint in #18 Mulled Peach ($8) and Peripera Ink Velvet in #33 Pure Pecan Brown ($9). Winter Cool types can try CLIO Dewy Blur Tint in #07 Berry Plum ($12) and Romand Glasting Water Tint in #02 Red Drop ($8).
Korean lip products in the $7-15 range offer many shades sorted by personal color. Romand has 50+ shades across its tint lines, explicitly categorized by season on their website and at Olive Young stores. Western brands like MAC ($21), Charlotte Tilbury ($35), and YSL ($40) offer fewer shades designed around the personal color system. Peripera and CLIO cost $8-14. Higher-end Korean options include Hera Sensual Powder Matte Lipstick ($32) and Sulwhasoo Essential Lip Serum Stick ($38), still 30-40% less than Western luxury equivalents.
When testing lip colors, always swatch on your inner wrist (not the back of your hand) as the skin tone there most closely matches your lip area. Apply in natural daylight, never under fluorescent store lighting, which distorts color perception. For versatility, own at least one MLBB (My Lips But Better) shade in your season, this is a subtle, natural-looking shade that enhances your lip color without dramatic change. Layer a clear or tinted gloss over matte tints to shift the finish without changing the color. If you are between seasons (common for Spring-Autumn or Summer-Winter), choose 'crossover' shades: dusty coral works for both Spring and Autumn, while mauve-pink works for both Summer and Winter.
