What happens
- You choose a look, such as a natural, idol or actress style.
- Some studios start with a face mask to calm the skin.
- The artist does your base, eyes and lips.
- A stylist blow-dries or flat-irons your hair. Updos can cost extra.
- Some visitors book a photo studio right after, or add a one-on-one makeup lesson.

Before you book
- Ask whether hair styling is included or priced separately.
- Bring photos of the look you want.
- If you want a photo shoot after, plan for a half day.
- Some studios open early for morning appointments. Ask if you need an early slot.

Next step: choosing a shop yourself
- Pick two or three shops near where you are staying. The neighborhoods above are where most listings are.
- Send each shop the same questions: the total price with tax, whether it is per person, whether English is available, and the deposit and cancellation rule.
- Compare the written answers. Booking-site banners are often promotions and change without notice.
- For lasers, injections or anything a doctor does, read the treatment page first and ask the clinic for its registration to treat foreign patients.
